How to Decorate Your Backyard Wedding

There are a lot of advantages to having a wedding in your own backyard. It’s more intimate that way and allows more freedom with scheduling and planning. You have total control of the space and you can experiment with themes as much as you want. The dress code, as well as basically all other rules, are completely up to you – you can make the event as playful or as romantic as it suits you. In the end, and it isn’t something to underestimate - it’s cost effective.

One of the most important things to have in mind with such a venue is the decoration. It will make a difference between an intimate private party and something that’s just thrown together at the last moment.

Use the nature

The venue itself provides a theme. And as with any theme, it’s best if it’s large enough to encompass different budgets and different styles, and on the other hand, narrow enough, so you don’t have to over-think the planning. Spruced up old logs can be used as chairs, trees themselves provide a beautiful backdrop, especially during sunset, which is when the main ceremony could take place. Depending on the season – the backyard can provide a rustic, nostalgic look or it can be bright and colorful.

Sings

Wooden signs directing guests to different event serve two main purposes. First of all, if the wedding is held at your home – you might want to be able to keep some privacy and therefore keep guests where you want them. Second, it’s kind of playful and in tone with the rest of the theme. Any arrow-shaped piece of wood will do and it’s best to write directions by hand. “Cocktails”, “food” and “ceremony” are probably the most important, but you can add others if there’s a need for them.

Centerpieces

Keeping up with the theme, centerpieces should mostly be made from flowers from your own garden. Of course, most of the creativity is in arranging them in an innovative way. Using weaved baskets is quite popular, but so are jars and vintage milk bottles. White porcelain pots can also be used to make an elegant centerpiece. The goal is to keep the arrangements simple and understated, even minimalistic if it’s possible. The colors depend on your choices and your overall theme, but obviously don’t go overboard.

Be prepared

Having your wedding outside comes with a few risks. For instance, the weather can ruin the whole thing for you. That’s why you have to think about it in advance –having a mobile coolroom, a power generator and a tent prepared means you don’t want to take any chances. Just remember, even the emergency options shouldn’t look cheap and unprepared. Try to incorporate them into your theme and the aesthetics you have created. That may seem like preparing two weddings at once, but if all goes well – it’s something you do once in a lifetime.

Lights

Lighting is a bit tricky with an outdoor wedding – you want to create an atmosphere, but you also need to have sufficient light. String lights are probably the best choice, because they are the middle ground between these two goals, but if you’re ready to make an extra effort – there really isn’t anything wrong with candlelight, as long as you are ready to buy a couple of hundreds of candles at once.

Backyard weddings are not for everyone. Some would prefer not to take up all that work. But, if you choose to have one – you’ll be able to create an atmosphere based on your own preferences.
