Implement Recycling and Composting in Your Home
If you don’t teach your kids to care about the environment now, they’re not going to care about it when they’re adults. That’s why it’s important to teach conservation throughout the year and instill eco-friendly habits now. Here are four things you can do to get your kids involved in seasonal conservation.

One of the best ways to get your kids involved in conservation is to implement recycling and composting in your home. It will take some time to train your kids, but soon they will automatically place milk jugs, cardboard boxes, and plastic products into your recycling bin year round. Composting is harder to implement because you need more space and a dedicated container, but it’s a great, hands-on way to teach your kids to care about the planet and reduce their environmental impact. Plus, you can save money because you won't have to buy compost for your garden.

As the spring and summer months roll in, starting a garden is a great way to teach your kids about sustainability and conservation. Your kids will be fascinated as they watch a seed grow into a mature plant and sprout food for your family. They might even be eager to taste the things you grow and develop healthy and sustainable eating habits that follow them for years. Make sure that gardening is one of your kids' chores so that they stay involved for the entire planting season.

The biggest portion of your energy bill is attributed to heating and cooling your home. During the summer, turn your thermostat down a bit and talk to your kids about opening windows in the evening when it’s cool and closing windows during the day and drawing shades to conserve energy. In the winter, lower your thermostat a few degrees and talk to your family about wearing a sweater and other habits to conserve energy. It's possible to be comfortable without using a ton of energy.

Small changes around your home can make a big difference on how much energy you use each month. Get your kids involved in fixing up your home with DIY projects, such as sealing air leaks around windows and doors, changing the air filter, insulating pipes, and choosing fixtures and appliances that reduce water usage. These are all great opportunities to teach your kids about conservation. Make sure your kids also watch as your HVAC unit gets a tune-up each year and talk about other ways to conserve energy.
It’s important to talk to your kids about seasonal conservation, but the most important thing you can do is lead by example. When your kids see you recycling, gardening, and doing other things that reduce your ecological impact, they will want to do the same thing.
