What Makes Seamless Gutters a Smart Choice?

If there's one type of damage that most homeowners worry about, it's moisture damage. Water can seep into different parts of your home, causing anything from unsightly water spots to structurally damaging rot and rust. To avoid water from your roof from getting everywhere, you need a gutter system--seamless gutters to be more specific--to safely channel it away from your home.

What’s a Seamless Gutter System?

A seamless gutter is a type of gutter system that is usually made of aluminum or steel. Unlike sectional gutter systems, which feature short individual sections joined together (hence their name), seamless gutters form one, continuous section that runs along the entire length of a roof's edge. This is made possible by using a single sheet of metal which can be cut during production or right before installation to match the roof's exact length.

Before you think of installing seamless gutters on your own, keep in mind that cutting metal sheets require special tools. Additionally, there is the work involved in getting gutter measurements right that’s why it is best to leave gutter installation to the pros.

Why is It the Smart Choice?

Both seamless and sectional gutters function in the same way, channeling water away to prevent moisture damage from creeping up on your home. However, the former has a few key advantages over the latter that you should take into consideration.

For starters, seamless gutters require way less maintenance. To be effective, sectional gutters have to have watertight seams. Otherwise, they’d be trickling water into your property every time it rains. This wouldn’t be troublesome if it weren’t for the fact that a sectional gutter system can have more sections than you can count with your fingers, depending on how big your property is. You have to check each joint and that’s going to be tedious. This isn’t a big issue for seamless gutters because it doesn’t have seams that need checking.

Seamless gutters are also custom-sized to fit your roof so you don’t have to worry about ill-fitting gutters. When rainwater flows through the gutter through, it’s not going anywhere but straight down your downspouts.
Last but not the least, seamless gutters have fewer nooks and crannies that may encourage birds and pests to build nests inside it. Bits of moisture can get between seams and encourage moss or algae to grow in a sectional gutter, but that's unlikely for a seamless gutter since there's nothing that can trap water inside the trough.

Caring for Seamless Gutters

While a seamless gutter system is easy to maintain, it will still benefit from regular cleaning and maintenance. In fact, routine care will help you make the most out of it as regular inspections will help catch problems while they are small, which makes them easier and cheaper to deal with.
Signs to watch for include:

Water dripping below the trough. This can be caused by either a leak in your gutter system or water overflows due to clogs.
Rusting. This means damage to metal gutters but can also be staining from metal nails and screws. Whatever the source of the rust, it must be replaced as its structural integrity has already been compromised by corrosion. This in turn can compromise the durability of a gutter system.
Warping. Constant changes in temperature and improper installation can facilitate expansion and contraction in a gutter system that leads to warping. Deformations in a gutter system can also be caused by impact from hail or falling tree branches.

Like any part of your home, your gutters will experience wear and tear. This is normal so don’t freak out. However, don’t take too long either to take action. Again, problems are easier and cheaper to deal with while they are small. Have a professional address the problem right away and it will be like it was never there.
Seamless gutters need nothing more than regular cleaning and inspections to stay in top shape. Want to make maintaining the gutter system even easier? Consider installing gutter covers, which go over your gutters to keep debris from creating clogs without hampering the flow of water from your roof. Gutter covers are also excellent for keeping small animals and pests out so you don’t have to worry about them calling your home theirs too.
